Greater Kyalami Conservancy Organisation (Gecko) celebrates 10 years

The Greater Kyalami Conservancy Organisation (Gecko) will be celebrating its 10th birthday on 8 April at Inanda Country Base.

Chairperson of Gecko Kristin Kallesen said by joining in the activities of the day members of the community would be showing support for all those who have worked to promote and protect Kyalami over the past decade.

“Enjoy a fun-filled morning. Bring your horse, mountain bike or walking shoes and experience what makes Kyalami great,” she said.

Gecko was formed by concerned residents to protect the wetlands, endangered species and vibrant equestrian character of the area.

Currently, the Kyalami area is known to many as the hub of equestrian activity in South Africa, home to the giant bullfrog, the African grass owl and an assortment of wildlife. The conservancy area is recognised in Gauteng’s Environmental Management Framework. The local residents’ association provides continual input to the City on the importance of this green lung in Johannesburg.

“Everyone is welcome to join us to say thank you and celebrate the beauty of this vibrant community,” added Kallesen.

The celebration will take place from 7am until 11am. Activities will include horseriding, a cycle ride and nature walk. Riders will be required to pay a fee of R150, walkers R100 and children R50. Those under four years of age will participate for free. The fee includes a boerie roll, hot dog roll or a prego roll.
