Metro police officer shot during a roadblock in Ivory Park Ext 2

MIDRAND – Police could not confirm whether suspects who shot a Metro police officer during a roadblock are linked to a robbery which took place in the area minutes before.

A Metro police officer was shot and wounded during a stop-and-search roadblock at Ivory Park Ext 2 on 20 March by occupants of a Toyota Hilux double cab.

The officer apparently tried to stop the vehicle with about four occupants inside. The Toyota Hilux slowed down instead of stopping and one of the passengers allegedly shot the officer in the hand and leg using a R5 rifle before driving away.

The wounded officer was rushed to a local hospital for medical attention.

A business robbery apparently took place a short while before the officer was shot in the same area. A group of men allegedly robbed a shop of an undisclosed amount of money as well as cellphones from customers who were in the shop at the time of the incident.

It was claimed the shop owner was assaulted and taken to a nearby clinic for treatment after the suspects fled the scene.

The spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station, Captain Bernard Matimulane confirmed the shooting incident but could not confirm whether or not the suspects were the same as those who committed the robbery.

“A case of attempted murder has been opened and is under investigation. I cannot confirm whether the suspects are related to the robbery that took place close to the shooting incident minutes before the shooting, but an investigation is underway,” said Matimulane.
