Members of the political parties handed over a memorandum to the station commander Brigadier David Ngcobo. Chairperson of the EFF Lusaka branch, Klass Seerane said they had invited the community to join them in the march. “We invited community members to march with us in the best interest of Ivory Park to speak with one voice to say enough is enough – nyaope and crime must fall. We hope our police station will make an effort to eradicate this problem in our ward,” Seerane said.
Part of the memorandum’s demands was the increased visibility of police officers in Ivory Park and police activities should be assessed following allegations that some police officers were receiving bribes from drug dealers.
Speaking on behalf of Ngcobo, spokesperson of the station Captain Bernard Matimulane said the police were prepared to work closely with the community and any other stakeholders to arrest drug dealers.
“He [Ngcobo] also used the opportunity to appeal to the community for anyone with information about the drug dens to assist the police. He said the concerns raised by the community are legitimate and the police are willing and prepared to work harder to address them,” added Matimulane.
