Johannesburg Roads Agency to meet with Glen Austin community about Austin Road

MIDRAND – JRA will hold a series of meetings with contractors and residents to address complaints about Austin Road.

The ongoing battle to have Austin Road in Glen Austin properly maintained has led the Johannesburg Roads Agency to host a series of site meetings with contractors and community members to resolve complaints.

Spokesperson for the agency, Bertha Peters-Scheepers said the agency was aware of community members’ complaints and they have undertaken to resolve them in a series of meetings.

This follows after residents Shaun and Belynda Nauschutz complained yet again about the dirt road which had not been graded and remained in a poor condition.

The couple has been at loggerheads with the agency and property developers since November last year about the maintenance of the road which needs constant grading to make it user-friendly for motorists.

Nauschutz said they have been living in the area for 26 years and the road has never been tarred. He said a few other obscure roads within the suburb have been tarred and upgraded, although in some cases these roads did not carry any traffic and led to dead ends.

“Our portion of Austin Road has been so badly eroded that we are now driving on ouklip [layer beneath top soil] in some places,” Nauschutz said.

Peters-Scheepers said the levelling of Austin Road commenced on 16 March.

“Delays are due to inclement weather which has created a blacklog of scheduled work and shortage of materials,” Peters-Scheepers concluded.
