Allandale house robbery suspect linked to earlier kidnapping case

IVORY PARK — Suspect turns out not to be a bright spark, after all, after leaving his cellphone in a victim's car during another robbery.

Ivory Park police have allegedly linked one of two men arrested on 17 January for house robbery and theft, to a hijacking and kidnapping that took place in Allandale on 13 January.

During the hijacking and kidnapping, a couple was confronted by a gang of five armed men in a white Toyota Tazz who pointed firearms at them. They were bundled into the car and driven to an isolated spot. The hijackers helped themselves to more than R30 000 worth of property – a laptop, bags, personal documents, money and clothing – which they loaded into the victims’ vehicle. The suspect was linked to the previous crime after allegedly leaving his cellphone in the stolen car, which was found abandoned in a veld in Allandale.

The 30-year-old man appeared in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 20 January, facing charges ranging from kidnapping and hijacking, to house robbery and theft. “Police are planning to oppose bail, considering the serious nature of the charges levelled against him. In the meantime, the search for the other four suspects he allegedly committed the carjacking and kidnapping with continues,” said Ivory Park police spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane.
