Tau bags another top position OR Tau goes global

JOBURG – Former Joburg mayor elected as president of the global body of local government.

Former mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Parks Tau has been appointed to another top position.

Tau has been elected as the president of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

UCLG is the umbrella body for local government around the world and has membership of more than 1 000 leading cities and virtually all of the local government associations in the world.

Spokesperson for the ANC in Johannesburg, Jolidee Matongo has wished the former mayor well and credited his great leadership skills for this achievement. Matongo described Tau as a leader with humility, a global unifier and a change agent. “We wish him all of the best in his new roles to transform lives at home and beyond borders,” Matongo said.

Tau was recently appointed as the chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) and the association has also expressed appreciation of Tau’s achievement. “The presidency [of UCLG] will provide a platform for South Africa, the African continent and the entire local government fraternity to drive sustainable development goals,” read Salga’s statement.

Referring to his new position, Tau said he was ready to be of service to the country, continent and the world. “We are ready and we have demonstrated our cohesion and that we can work together as a continent. It is not somebody doing us a favour. We are active and leading members of the world body UCLG,” Tau said.
