Police and CPF tackle crime

MIDRAND – Midrand police and Community Policing Forum discuss new strategies to tackle crime in the area.

The Midrand Community Policing Forum (CPF) held a meeting at the Midrand Police Station on 28 September.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss a new strategy to fight crime. As part of the strategy, the station has appointed two operations commanders; Captain Lionel Chetty will deal with physical crimes such as murders, break-ins, hijackings and robberies and Captain Ignatius Molepo will be the commander for social crime prevention. Different initiatives will also be implemented to try and ensure the strategy is a success.

Chetty is the newly appointed operations commander for the station. He said he wanted to involve all spheres of the community in the fight against crime, including the Metro police, the Gauteng Liquor Board and the CPF.

Metro police’s Region A operation commander, Amon Kganyago was present at the meeting to discuss the way forward in the new working relationship with the Midrand police, which will include increased visibility of the Metro police and roadblocks.

According to the acting station commander, Colonel David Mahloromela, the station is among the top 30 in the country for reported crimes. “Assault, robberies and hijackings are rife in Midrand and the station hopes that with the new strategy, there will be an increase in roadblocks and a clampdown on brothels [which] will minimise the levels of crime,” added Mahloromela.

Chetty confirmed that they would increase the visibility of police in the area, improve transparency so the community could be aware of the positive strides made by the station, and clarify the processes and procedures the community could follow when opening cases.
