Two car-jammers nabbed at Midway Mews

MIDRAND – Car-jammers in Midway Mews Shopping Centre drove over a car guard as they tried to escape.

Two alleged car jammers, in their early 30s, have appeared at Midrand Magistrates’ Court for theft and reckless driving, after they were arrested at Midway Mews Shopping Centre in Midrand.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar said, “The suspects were arrested on 14 September by an off-duty Metro police officer who spotted a silver polo trying to drive away from car guards at Midway Mews. The suspects collided with a stationary BMW X5.

“It was later discovered that, when the owner of the vehicle parked, the suspects allegedly car jammed it. They then stole an iPad, laptop and a cellphone.”

Ria Sebetsa Security chief executive officer, Danny Maduray, said the company’s security officers were also at the scene. “After they tried to escape, the suspects ran over a security guard in the process and drove into a stationary vehicle.”

Netcare 911’s Athlenda Mathe said paramedics were dispatched to the scene of the accident towards 6pm. She revealed that when the paramedics arrived, they found a tow truck driver who is a qualified basic life support paramedic, already treating the patient.

Mathe added, “When paramedics arrived, the tow-truck driver handed the patient over to Netcare911 and Carewell paramedics. The man – who was run over – was treated for moderate injuries. Paramedics stabilised the man before he was transported by Carewell paramedics to a nearby health facility.”

Speaking on behalf of Midrand Police Station, branch commander for detectives, Lieutenant Amelia Koekemoer said, “The suspects appeared in Midrand Magistrates’ Court, where bail was refused and the case remanded. Police will investigate to see if the men are linked to other cases of car-jamming in Midrand,” said Koekemoer.

Midway Mews Shopping Centre management was contacted for comment but has yet to respond.
