Police meet community to address crime

MIDRAND – Ivory Park Police say that Ebony Park, Allandale, Kaalfontein and some portions of Glen Austin have high crime rates.

Ivory Park Police Station commander, Brigadier Mbongeni David Ngcobo met some members of the community at a local school in Ebony Park, to encourage them to work closely with the police to fight crime.

Ivory Park police spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane said the meeting was informed by the realisation that the police could not fight crime on their own and that the community – through community policing forums and other important structures – could play an important role in the fight against crime.

Matimulane explained, “Ebony Park, Allandale, Kaalfontein and some portions of Glen Austin, which form the Sector 4 policing precinct of Ivory Park, have been particularly hard-hit by violent crime. It was this concern that Ngcobo, who was accompanied to the meeting by Visible Policing (Vispol) police and detective commanders, made the call to the community.”

Police asked the community to:

  • Be aware of their surroundings and know who their neighbours and tenants are;
  • Ask members of stokvels and anyone who wants to withdraw large amounts of money to speak to their banks as they have ways and means of moving money without people having to carry it on their person. This will minimise incidents of people being followed after leaving banks with cash, and robberies, which tend to escalate as December approaches;
    Organise themselves through structures and join these structures to enable them to work closely and effectively with the police in the fight against crime.

The station commander also introduced residents to the newly appointed sector manager for Sector 4, Captain Mbongiseni Mpungose and his deputy, Constable Lehlohonolo Buthelezi.
