NSPCA investigates concerns raised about Midrand SPCA

MIDRAND – Midrand SPCA volunteers question how the pound is run, NSPCA investigates.

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has confirmed to Midrand Reporter that it is in the process of investigating allegations raised by volunteers at Midrand SPCA.

The allegations, which have not been listed as they are not yet proven to be factual, include volunteers’ grievances and allegations about how the animal pound is managed.

Meg Wilson, national inspector for the society’s liaison unit, said meetings have been held with the volunteers and the Midrand SPCA management. She explained, “A special general meeting has been called to elect a new management committee; however, the meeting was not called constitutionally due to not having enough members coming forward, as is required in terms of the SPCA’s Constitution.

“The NSPCA, therefore, called another meeting between both parties to facilitate the meeting and act as mediators. Recommendations are being made to both parties, and the NSPCA will ensure that the matters are resolved. We can also confirm that the manager of the society resigned in the interim.

“We take every complaint reported to us seriously and will not hesitate to take the appropriate action when it is necessary.”

A volunteer, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Midrand Reporter, “We are happy with the steps management and the NSPCA have taken after the meeting, such as making some of the volunteers part of the management committee and an NSPCA member now sits on the committee too.

“We want to assure the community that volunteers and staff at Midrand SPCA will continue to do what is best for the animals in our care. We also plan to upgrade the animal pound so that it is a friendly and warm atmosphere for the animals.” Some of the upgrades will include building dog runs, a cat play area and revamping kennels.
