Honouring Nelson Mandela through giving

MIDRAND – Schools commemorate Mandela Day and spend time doing service in the community.

 

In honour of the late President Nelson Mandela, schools in Midrand took part in various charitable activities and joined the global movement of 67 minutes to celebrate the life work of Mandela by doing good work in the community.

Secret Garden Nursery School collected dog and cat food for the Midrand SPCA in commemoration of Mandela Day. Principal of the nursery school, Liz Crewe said, “Thank you to the children and staff of Secret Garden Nursery School for taking part in the initiative.”

Summerhill College collected 770 cans of tinned food for Mandela Day. A teacher at the school, Teressa Oates said, “The cans will be donated to the Johannesburg Child Welfare to be distributed to needy families. Pupils and staff spent the last few months knitting 48 blankets for the Johannesburg Mini Councillors Blanket Drive. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their generosity and kind hearts.”

A teacher at Horizon Blue Day Care, Linda Ncube said, “We asked all children to donate tinned foods to New Jerusalem Children’s Home as our good cause for Mandela Day.”
