Musician struck by robot pole after it was hit by car

MIDRAND – Musician talks about how he escaped without visible injuries after an accident in Midrand,

An upcoming musician from Midrand was allegedly hit by a car and the driver did not wait until police arrived.

Byron Khumalo said the incident took place in June at Noordwyk and explained, “A man knocked me down with his Nissan Navara. He veered off the road and drove into a traffic light which hit me, throwing me to the other side of oncoming traffic.”

Khumalo explained that he thought the motorist got out of the vehicle to assist him. “However, all he could talk about was the damage done to his car. After that, he offered to drop me off quickly at a clinic as he was rushing to Germiston.”

Khumalo said he pointed out to the motorist that they both had to wait until police came to the scene of the accident but the motorist said he had to go. “He promised to return later and we would talk about the accident and he gave me his phone number, leaving me without visible injuries but in pain.”

He said he had to get help from witnesses at the scene. “I went home but hours later my leg and shoulder became extremely painful and started swelling and I ended up having to go to a hospital to get X-rays which showed more swelling on my leg and shoulder.”

Midrand Reporter spoke to the motorist who referred to himself only as Sibusiso. He did not offer a reason as to why he left before the matter could be settled, he only said, “I had to veer off the road as another motorist was driving badly and would have caused an accident.

“I offered Khumalo my contact number and a lift to the clinic but he declined.”

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “The South African Police or Metro police can only be contacted if the accident caused injuries or death, other than that the drivers are expected to exchange particulars and to report the accident to the nearest police station within 24 hours.”

Minnaar stressed that it is important to also take down the number plates of the vehicle or vehicles involved. If there are injuries and the other driver refuses to wait for police, the victim can take down the driver’s number plates and the driver will be charged with failing to give their name and address at an accident scene.

The hospital that treated Khumalo could not comment due to its confidentiality clause.
