Taxi operator faces Mall of Africa murder charge

JOBURG - Taxi operator on bail for murder and attempted murder outside Mall of Africa.

 

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court granted a taxi operator R5 000 bail.

He is accused of the murder and attempted murder of operators of a rival taxi association. The case has been postponed to 14 July.

The accused was alleged to have shot the victims late in the afternoon of 19 April near the recently opened Mall of Africa in Midrand. There have been a series of shooting incidents, allegedly between rival associations over taxi routes to and from the mall.

The suspect allegedly shot and killed one taxi operator and injured five others in a group congregating near the mall. It was said the man was first observed in a car that drove slowly past the group before it sped off.

The accused was said to have then returned on foot with three others, with him holding a gun. When the accused got closer, he allegedly opened fire on the group, fatally wounding one and injuring the others. After that, the accused and his accomplices walked away from the scene.

Paramedics were called and certified one victim dead on the scene. The other victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The accused was later arrested, however, the firearm was not recovered. It is unknown if the accused’s accomplices have been arrested.
