Eyewitness speaks out about kidnap

VORNA VALLEY – An eyewitness to the escape of a young woman from her kidnappers' has come forward with new information.

Tanya Smith, a Vorna Valley woman, has spoken out on how she helped a woman who was recently kidnapped in Midrand.

Smith said she was working from home with her earphones on when she heard a loud scream through the music. “I immediately checked through my window to see what was going on,” said Smith.

She saw a young woman sitting by the side of the road surrounded by workers who were installing fibre optics in the area. Smith said she went to check on her and found the woman bleeding.

The young woman, whose identity is still unknown, said she had been walking home when a car pulled up next to her on Harry Galaun Avenue in Midrand. The men asked her if she knew how to get to Boulders Shopping Mall and she tried to give them directions, but they asked her to accompany them instead.

“She got into the car and as she looked around she saw handcuffs and then asked them to stop the car. The door had a child-proof lock so she said she quickly put her hand out of the window and opened it from the outside and threw herself out of the car.”

Smith got the young woman a herbal tranquilizer for the shock and an ointment for her wounded knee. “I called Ria Sebetsa Security because they are so near and they called the police. Her sister was also called to the scene. The police advised her [victim] to get medical attention first and then go back to the police station to open a case,” she said.

When contacted for confirmation, Constable Matome Tlamela of Midrand Police Station said a case was yet to be opened with regards to the incident.
