Midrand company gives wheelchairs to children in need

MIDRAND – A little care for those in need goes a long way in making their everyday lives better.

Marais 4 Architects have, for the third year, donated wheelchairs to pupils with disabilities, as part of the company’s bi-annual fundraising initiative.

Hope School in Johannesburg and Medicos Special School in Shoshanguwe each received a donation of two wheelchairs. The recipients of the wheelchairs were Grade 11 pupil, Diketso Sempe who has quadriplegia, Ashley Sambo who has ataxia following a brain injury after removal of a brain tumour, and 14-year-old Kabelo Kgoele who suffers from muscular dystrophy.

Principal architect at Marais 4 Architects, Eben Marais said, “We got involved and donated wheelchairs as we are passionate about caring for the community. In addition, we replaced a worn-out wheelchair at Medicos Special School for pupils with severe handicaps. They use the chair to transport pupils suffering from epilepsy between classes and the sick bay when they require assistance and on field trips.”

Hope School principal Michele Alexander said the school was extremely grateful to the company for their continued support. “The donation of wheelchairs to specific pupils has significantly improved their mobility and independence,” she said.

“Hope School is still in need of a generator to cope with power outages, a water storage tank to provide clean water to the learners with special needs and to provide sustainable medical care during water outages.

“The school is also in need of renovations to an existing classroom to fit it out as a life sciences laboratory that is accessible to learners in wheelchairs.”
