Alexandra May is on a musical journey

JOBURG – Music is what this new artist loves, and she has a passion for dance and acting.

Alexandra May, a recording artist who lives in Fourways and works in Woodmead, spoke about her musical journey and her involvement with the Christ Church community in Midrand.

May’s love for music began at age seven when she began perfoming in theatre productions. The 20-year-old describes her sound as a mixture of everything she loves in music, whether that be retro or the 80s. She said, “My family is very musical. I was surrounded by music and dancing, and acting also intrigued me.”

May started out doing ballet and modern dancing, and has also been taking part in Latin American and ballroom dancing for the past three years. As a child, she appeared on SABC’s Fun Factory and in her teens she performed at the People’s Theatre in Johannesburg in productions such as Beauty and The Beast, Disney’s Little Mermaid and Sleeping Beauty and more.

In 2012, she also performed her own show Regardez – Journey in Song at the Sandton Theatre on the Square. “I love music, dance and acting. I can not imagine my life without those.”

In 2014, she joined the Africa Voices Programme, an organisation geared towards the development of highly talented and deserving young musicians beginning their careers in the music and film industries. May was mentored by industry greats such as David Kramer and Mike Myers.

May has performed with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra and the Rand Symphony Orchestra, and in 2016 signed to renowned South African label, The David Gresham Record Company.

Her main aim is to inspire people with her music.
