Live music around the city

JOHANNESBURG - Concerts SA paves the way for local music stars.

Concerts SA is spreading local music culture across the country.

“With the objective of creating and strengthening a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa, Concerts SA supports the live music sector using a multi-pronged approach,” said Concerts SA project manager, Nailla Dollie.

Dollie explained that the company, which was started in 2013 by South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro), Concerts Norway and the Norwegian Embassy, aims to grow the local music sector in three steps.

Concerts SA partners with selected music venues which offer regular and quality music programming in order to stabilise these performance spaces and enable the hosting of regular live performances. The idea is that this will then contribute towards a regular income for musicians and other professionals in the music sector.

The company then showcases music performances and conducts workshops at schools with the aim to develop an interest in, and appreciation of, live music. Finally, it facilitates touring musicians in South Africa and within the southern Africa region, but that’s not all.

“Concerts SA also conducts specialised research on local music, organises skills development workshops and promotes professional exchange with Norway with a view to strengthen the sector locally,” said Dollie.

With such diversity in local music, the company aims to showcase all genres and talent, and never lets any concert be similar to another.

“All the concerts are different and bring a unique experience,” she said.

“The performances at schools through our School Circuit programme also bring new and joyous experiences to schoolchildren. In Joburg, we have regular weekly performances at Niki’s Oasis in Newtown, Afrikan Freedom Station in Westdene, and we also partner with The Orbit in Braamfontein on specific concerts.”

Concerts SA will continue to provide live music to venues across the country, create earning opportunities for local musicians, provide a platform for local music and will continue to build the live music scene.
