Police investigate shooting of Ivory Park Taxi Association member

MIDRAND - Tembisa Police Station is investigating the murder of an Ivory Park Taxi Association grievance chairperson.

Tembisa Police Station is investigating the murder of Ivory Park Taxi Association grievance chairperson, Dumisani Mlambo, who was shot and killed in Tembisa on 3 May.

Tembisa police spokesperson Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha said a sergeant from the Provincial Investigation Unit received a complaint that there was a shooting at the corner of DM Marokane and Rev Namane Street at Maokeng Section in Tembisa.

He revealed, “On arrival the officer noticed a silver VW Amarok with several bullet holes in it. Inside the car was a 50 year-old-man who had bullet wounds to the stomach, hands and head, and his right leg was broken. Paramedics certified him dead on the scene.”

Ralidzhivha said according to a passerby, the deceased was waiting at a red robot when a white old model Toyota Corolla with three armed occupants, and an unknown registration number, pulled up to the victim’s vehicle and started shooting at him then drove away.

“The deceased had his car window open and he allegedly tried to jump to the passenger side while the suspects kept shooting at him. The motive for the shooting is still unknown, police are looking into the matter.”

Police are appealing to members of the community who may have information on the suspects to come forward.

Ivory Park Taxi Association spokesperson Sam Sibisi said the association is mourning but also wants to celebrate the life Mlambo lived. “We want to celebrate his life, but it is with deep sadness that we learnt that he was shot dead. The association has lost a great man, a family man and a disciplinarian who was passionate about his work.”

A statement from the association stated, “Taxi associations are blaming the government for being responsible for all the mishap that is causing loss of human life and when Mall of Africa took off the ground they [government] were supposed to have engaged them [taxi associations] in roundtable discussions as part of the City’s Intergrated Development Plan.”

A press statement stated that the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane and Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi, met with taxi associations to iron out the violence that marred the Mall of Africa opening week on 4 May.

Sibisi said Mlambo was buried on 15 May in Tembisa.
