Industrious little ones

MIDRAND - The pupils of Tree Tops Montessori preschool got creative when making gifts for Mother's Day.

Tree Tops Montessori preschool children spent a lot of time making things for their moms for Mother’s Day.

This year they made mugs, bowls, serviette rings, place mats, name tags, plates and certificates. “They learn many skills during this process including [arts and crafts],” said, Jenny de Kock, the school’s principal.

“These skills are all linked to learning experiences that included chemical reactions, oil and water do not mix, patterning and density and resistance.”

The children also made invitation cards, baked cappuccino and blueberry muffins, and created a menu with the help of their teachers. “The order menu consisted of all the items on offer for breakfast with the words and they drew the picture next to it,” said De Kock.

On the day, moms first enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee, muffins and muesli with yogurt served in the bowls made by the children. The children then sang a song for their mothers.

“Tissues had to come out as there were lots of tears,” said De Kock. After the singing, the children took out their order forms and pencils to take their mom’s hot breakfast order. On the menu was mushrooms, beef or vegetarian sausages, scrambled eggs, corn and potato casserole, grilled tomatoes and toast with fresh fruit juice.

“Once the moms were served, the children also got to enjoy breakfast served by the teachers – although they were reminded to check whether their moms needed anything,” she laughed.
