One person killed and four seriously injured in suspected taxi turf war

MIDRAND - One person was killed and four others were seriously injured in a shooting incident, thought to be caused by rivalry among taxis over a new route, on Allandale Road at around 5pm on 19 April.

EMER-G-MED and Netcare911 paramedics responded to the scene. Spokesperson for EMER-G-MED Max Cohen said, “It is believed that a group of assailants opened fire on a group of people comprising of passengers, a taxi driver and a taxi owner.” He said it was alleged that the shooting incident was sparked by taxi turf war over a new route.

Cohen said one of the victims succumbed to his injuries while the other four were found in a critical condition and were stabilised on scene before being transported to nearby hospitals. He said most of the critically injured patients were transported under Advanced Life Support Care for further treatment.

Danny Maduray of Ria Sebetsa Security Services said his team responded to the scene and said a taxi driver was killed in the incident. Maduray confirmed that some of the victims who were shot were “innocently waiting for a taxi”.

Cohen said authorities were on scene to investigate the incident.

Midrand Reporter is following up with police on the incident.
