IEC voting registration weekend a success

MIDRAND – Voter registration weekend has come and gone in Midrand, but was it a success? Some political parties weigh in on the matter.

The general tone from some of the political parties vying to be councillors in Midrand is that the IEC’s registration weekend was a success.

DA Ward 112 councillor Candice James said this does not mean that the weekend went without some glitches. “[I believe] that people were not notified of the new voting station at Noordwyk Secondary School [which meant a very low] turnout of registrants,” said James.

She also said that she found it problematic that some residents were given the runaround. “Some residents were being sent from station to station as some of the equipment at stations was not working,” James said, adding that despite all of this, Ward 112 recorded close to 5 000 registrations over the weekend.

James also claimed that her party’s overall performance during the weekend of 9 and 10 April was stellar. “As the DA, we got many members and new volunteers. So we’re happy with our results.”

The EFF’s Group Force leader, David Nhlapo echoed James’ sentiments. “This was a successful turnout for us,” said Nhlapo.

“[We were especially pleased] because a number of people came to us and asked us about the EFF’s policies – white, black, Indian, professionals and even domestic workers were curious about us.”

Nhlapo said he didn’t have the official numbers but he suspected they had gained more than 100 new members at Midrand High School voting station alone. The EFF has yet to announce their candidates for councillor in the Midrand area. “We will announce that very soon,” said Nhlapo.

Those who have not yet registered still have the opportunity to do so at their local IEC offices. If you are registered but have moved to a new address since the last elections, you are advised to send your ID number to 32810 or visit the IEC website to update your details.
