Taxi involved in accident, one dead

GLEN AUSTIN – A person has died in an accident involving a taxi on 11 April.

One person has been killed and 14 others have been injured after the taxi they were travelling in lost control and rolled down an embankment on the corners of Dane and Modderfontein Roads, in Midrand this morning.

Just after 7am EMER-G-MED paramedics were dispatched to the scene of the horror crash. On arrival paramedics found the badly damaged taxi lying in an open field, with passengers strewn across the area.

It’s alleged that the taxi was overtaking another vehicle and to avoid a head on collision the driver swerved off the road, losing control and rolling multiple times down the embankment.

Unfortunately, one of the passengers was found to have already succumbed to her injuries. Paramedics could do nothing further- and she was declared dead on the scene.

Two people were in a critical condition and required immediate Advanced Life Support interventions. While stabilizing the critically injured patients the Netcare911 aero medical helicopter was called in to airlift them to a specialist trauma hospital for further urgent management.

The remaining 12 patients sustained minor to serious injuries – some requiring Advanced Life Support care. They were treated on-scene before being transported to various nearby hospitals by road.

Metro police’s specialist accident investigation unit were on-scene to conduct a full investigation into the events leading up to the crash.
