Naughty Dance wins R10 000 in soccer tournament

KYALAMI - Kappa Park Kyalami hosted a soccer tournament that was worth a grand prize of R10 000 for the winning team.

After a gruelling day of matches against other teams, Naughty Dance took the top prize. Ericsson and Soweto Scorpions Football Club took second and third place respectively.

Organiser of the tournament and owner of Kappa Park, Vincent Peters, said he hoped that by hosting the tournament every season, it inspired teams around Johannesburg to up their level of play. “I definitely think it brings the standard up a bit because it is a nice prize,” said Peters. He said, he and his business partner, Leon Thistle encouraged teams that were still in developmental stages to participate in the tournament as it offered a sum of money that could make a real difference to their team.

On the day, 32 teams registered to play and about 600 spectators came to watch them compete. “It is always good to see everyone out, having a good time,” said Peters. “The players always bring their families along and people from around the area always come and support.”

Three of the supporters on the day were Thabiso Mokgothoa, Thulani Skhosana and his son Thandolwethu. The Centurion residents said they were just looking for a day out when they stumbled upon an advert for the tournament. “Well, my son and I love football, and we just thought why not,” said Skhosana. He said he saw a lot of potential in the players. “They are really good, I’m pleased,” he said.

Peters said, “We wish to thank all the teams who took part in the tournament as well as our event sponsors, Hyundai Woodmead, Kappa and Aqua Vita which made the day a huge success. [We hope] to see everyone back at the next one.”
