Ikamva Youth take on technology

MIDRAND - Ikamva Youth, founded in 2003, is a township-based non-profit organisation that provides free after-school academic support and extra-curricular programmes to Grade 9 to 12 pupils.

The aim of the organisation is to lift young people out of the confines of poverty, into a tertiary institution and employment opportunities. “This will set them on a path to a dignified life,” said Ditiro Huma, Gauteng District Coordinator for the organisation. Pupils can voluntarily apply for the programme at no cost and there are no academic requirements and/or assessments for entry, however, a minimum of 75 percent attendance is required in order for the pupil to guarantee their place in the programme.

In addition to the tutoring, computer literacy and e-learning, career guidance, life skills programmes, media, image and expression sessions, and mentoring are provided. The Ebony Park wing of the organisation recently received a computer lab which their pupils can use to enhance their learning experience.

These programmes, together with a two-week winter school, make up Ikamva Youths’ comprehensive model that supports and provides pupils with the information they require to succeed.

“Tutoring sessions are conducted by university students who have returned to pay it forward,” said Huma.
