Pregnant woman raped, suspect arrested

IVORY PARK - Ivory Park police officers recently arrested a man for the alleged rape and kidnap of an eight-month pregnant woman.

It is alleged that the victim was walking with a friend on their way from a church service in Joburg when they noticed the suspect sitting on the side of the road with luggage.

Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, said the victim and her friend were suspicious of the man and tried to run away, however, the pregnant woman could not run fast enough and the suspect gave chase and grabbed her. The victim’s friend managed to escape.

It is claimed the suspect forced the woman to carry his luggage and insisted that she accompany him to his home in Ivory Park Ext 2. Along the way, he is said to have promised the woman that he would not harm her, however, he allegedly raped her twice en route.

Sekgobela explained, “On the way to the suspect’s residence, the victim noticed that he did not live far from her home and thought of a way to escape. Upon arrival at his home, the victim asked the suspect to release her so she could go and check on her friend who had run away earlier.”

The suspect is said to have agreed to let her see her friend only if he accompanied her. It is alleged that the house that the victim had mentioned was not her friend’s house, but that of her own. The victim, leaving the suspect a few feet away, went to the door and when her sister opened it, told her that the suspect had raped her.

“It is alleged that the victim’s sister managed to convince the suspect to come into the house and moments after he was inside, she locked the door and called the police,” said Sekgobela.

The suspect was arrested at the victim’s home and appeared at Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 16 February. He is being held at Modderbee Prison in Benoni as he had not yet made a bail application.
