Criminals use crying children to target residents

Danny Maduray, chief executive officer of Ria Sebetsa Security Services writes:

Ria Sebetsa Security Services would like to alert the community to three incidents which happened recently.

We received a call from a community member about a child crying outside on his driveway. We dispatched a vehicle, however, when we got there in less than two minutes, there was no child to be found.

In another incident, someone called at midnight saying perpetrators were throwing stones onto his roof and when we arrived, the perpetrators heard us coming and escaped.

On 12 February at noon, a female was offered a lift from Midrand Fire Station to Johannesburg, however, she was dropped off at Vorna Valley and robbed of her valuables. When Ria Sebetsa Security Services’ patrol vehicle noticed the pregnant female, they assisted her. She told them she [had been]robbed of her money, cellphone and handbag. We looked for the suspects, but could not find them. A Ria Sebetsa security officer took the pregnant victim to Midrand Police Station to open a case and also gave her cash to take a taxi home.

We suspect that criminals throw stones onto properties and use children in the hope that residents will come out of their homes and become an easy target. If residents experience this, do not go outside but call the police or a security company or press your panic alarm button. We urge all persons not to take lifts with strangers.

All of these residents were not Ria Sebetsa clients, however, Ria Sebetsa Security Services helps the community at large.
