Police crack down on crime in Midrand

MIDRAND - Midrand police officer Sergeant Nkatingi Benji and his team arrested seven suspects for bribery and possession of dagga at Allandale Road, Kyalami Hills.

Midrand police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela said police received a tip-off on 17 November about illegal activities taking place and responded. Police found seven men aged between 19 and 30 sitting together, they searched them and allegedly saw a bag of dagga on the table where the suspects were sitting.

“The suspects were questioned about the dagga but, instead, tried to offer the police officers a bribe of R1 500. Police arrested all the suspects for possession of dagga and bribery,” said Tlamela.

The suspects will appear at Midrand Magistrates’ Court soon.

In another case, a 30-year-old suspect was arrested for housebreaking with the intent to steal on Chris Barnard Street in Vorna Valley on 21 November. The complainants were at home at the time the crime was committed and told police that they were surprised to suddenly see an unknown man enter their home. One of the people in the house screamed and the suspect got scared and ran outof the door.

Tlamela said the suspect jumped over the wall. One of the complainants gave chase, but the suspect managed to escape. “The complainant later learnt that the suspect works at a construction site close to where the crime was committed. The complainant went to the site and asked them to call him when they see the suspect,” said Tlamela.

Later that day, the complainant received a call that the suspect had returned to work. Police were called and the suspect was arrested. He will soon appear in court facing a charge of housebreaking with intent to steal.”
