Region A identified for service delivery

JOBURG - According to Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Parks Tau, there is a huge need for a community health centre that offers 24-hour medical care in the Diepsloot area.

This was revealed in a Quality of Life survey to measure performance and the community’s expectation of service delivery, which was commissioned by Tau at the beginning of last year. The survey also reported that there was a need for educational facilities in the rapidly growing Midrand central area; and during the past few months, city council officials responsible for Region A (which includes all of Fourways and most of Midrand) have been busy boosting the quality of life for the residents in the area.

Tau said the analysis enabled the City to identify service delivery areas that the public was unhappy with and where the city council needed to redirect and invest more resources. Some of the projects identified included the Mpumelelo Clinic in Ivory Park which was demolished and rebuilt into a state-of-the-art facility which was opened by Tau in April this year.

Meanwhile, the Halfway House clinic is currently being upgraded and now has 13 consultation rooms and will be operational by the end November this year.

The Region A environmental health department had reason to celebrate after it won a number of awards at the Alfred Nzo conference, which is a national annual event to acknowledge research projects and best practices in the environmental health section of the various regions.

This department won four awards, namely:

  •  Best Region: Region A – for best region in the city
  •  Best manager: Environmental Health, Jacques Scholtz
  •  Best research presentation: Ian Rabie, environmental health practitioner won first prize for research on waste management in the Diepsloot area
  •  Best environmental health practitioner in the Region: Ashira Rugnanan for best environmental health practitioner in Region A.
