Estate homes without electricity and water for days

KYALAMI - About 70 homes in Kyalami Estates have been without electricity, and others without water for the past two weeks, with no solution in sight.

According to Gail Kruger, manager of Kyalami Estates, there were no pre-termination notices issued to any of the affected residents before the disconnection.

She added that most of the residents had paid their utility bills and provided proof of payment, but their electricity and water had not yet been reconnected. “As far as we have established over the past few days, these [disconnections] are illegal terminations because the City Of Johannesburg’s own bylaws state that people have to be served with pre-termination notices giving them 14 days to rectify the problem, and that disconnections may not happen over a weekend – both of which they violated,” Kruger said.

“By their own admission, they changed the due dates on people’s accounts by mistake. Who will cover the cost of the fridge and freezer contents of these [people] or the loss of business for those who work from home?”

According to Kruger, the entity’s lack of empathy and morality has been nothing short of despicable.
