3 people with suspected rhino horn and ammunition bust in Midrand

MIDRAND - Three suspects were arrested today at 1pm by Midrand police officers for possession of suspected rhino horn and ammunition at a garage on the N1 North.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Warrant Officer Sello Freddy Lebea and his team received an anonymous tip-off from a caller, informing them about an alleged transaction about to take place at the garage.

“Police proceeded to the garage as per the information. Upon arrival they [police] spotted the green Toyota with three occupants inside. Police searched the occupants and found nothing illegal in their possession and proceeded to the car boot where they found a horn, suspected to be a rhino horn, and  ammunition inside a box,” he said.

Mulaudzi said the suspects were questioned about the box and its contents. They did not give a satisfactory explanation.

All three suspects were arrested for possession of suspected rhino horn and ammunition, since none of the suspects have a license to possess ammunition. The suspects will appear in court soon, facing charges of possession of suspected rhino horn and ammunition.
