Conquering roaring rapids

MIDRAND - John Greeff, who works in Midrand and is a member of the Centurion Canoe Club, has enjoyed gaining skills and river reading ability on various rivers throughout South Africa.

The N4 Trac Lowveld Crocodile K1 River Race is one of Greeff’s favourites with its challenging whitewater and technical difficulties. It is the only triple-A rated river race that falls under the Gauteng calendar of races.

“Greeff participated in the race and finished it in an overall time of six hours and 18 minutes, and is looking forward to next year’s event already,” said Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union.

“With a water release from the Kwena Dam, the river flows with a fast downhill gradient towards Nelspruit, around the contours of the mountains through the valleys of Schoemanskloof.

“With numerous rocky rapids, steep drops, sharp, tight corners with huge boulders scattered across the narrow river, it provides a spectacular and scenic challenge for experienced whitewater river racers.”
