An injured man without medical aid receives help

ALLANDALE - An endoscopy and laser technician, Dirk van den Berg found an injured man, whose name has been withheld as Midrand Reporter was unable to reach him for comment, near Life Carstenhof Clinic and did all he could to get him treatment.

He told Midrand Reporter, “When I saw him I asked hospital guards if they had seen what happened to him, but no one knew.”

He took the injured man into the hospital and once there they realised the new patient did not have medical aid. Van den Berg quickly offered to pay for the man’s hospital stay and treatment.

“As someone who is in the field of medicine, my first instinct is to try and save a life. I agreed to help without even thinking of how it would impact me financially at the time,” he said.

What he didn’t know was that the hospital would repay him the money he paid for the man he helped. The patient, who had been unconscious after being admitted, awoke and thanked Van den Berg for his generosity. He told doctors that he had been mugged just outside the hospital and his phone was stolen. Due to this, Midrand Reporter could not get in touch with the former patient, and he had already been discharged from the hospital.

The hospital spokesperson Karabo Motsoagae said, “The hospital is proud of the way Van den Berg showed compassion to someone in the community. Life Carstenhof Clinic chose to carry all medical costs for the injured man as a way to give back to the community.”

Motsoagae revealed that there have been three mugging incidents outside the hospital in the past few weeks. The incidents were reported to police.
