Minnaar said,”Six men were taken to Midrand Police Station in connection with an illegal firearm found in a taxi association control car.”

He added that 32 taxis were also impounded in the morning of 16 July on the R55 near Diepsloot. “The taxis did not have the necessary road transport documents and had expired licence discs.”
Impounded vehicle owners have to produce valid licence discs and valid road transport documents before they can pay a fine of R1 500 per vehicle to get the vehicles back.

Minnaar said a joint operation with members of Johannesburg Metro Police Department, South African police and Gauteng traffic police, who are all working together, will ensure the safety of taxi commuters in the area following taxi violence at Woodmead this week.
Midrand police spokesperson Matome Tlamela confirmed that four suspects were charged with possession of the unlicenced firearm.
