Car guard hero

LAST week a woman took to social media, as so many of us do, to tell her story. To escape the dreaded load shedding, she went out for dinner with her family in Norwood.

They parked their car on the side of the road, and upon their return – they found a car guard waiting patiently next to their car.

Not only had he made sure the car was safe, he had also guarded their iPad, which had been left on the roof of the car. The man told the family that he took his job very seriously and hoped that some day, he would find a more stable income.

His honesty amazes me, as it did so many others. And fittingly, the man’s name is Trust – and boy did he live up to his name.

It is so nice to know that while we live in a city riddled with crime, fraudsters and dishonesty, there is still a glimmer of hope. There are still people out there who, against all the odds – are amazing.

I love stories like this and it is sad that we don’t hear more of them. For me, last week was a week of people being dishonest and deceitful. Reading this story online restored my faith in humanity and reminded me why I love Joburg.

I truly hope that someone will read the post and be able to find Trust a job which will give him the stability and financial support he needs, he deserves it – as do so many other people out there.

It would have been so easy for Trust to take the iPad. The family did not know it was there and never would have suspected him. They might have even given him a tip at the end of the night – not knowing he was a criminal hiding in plain sight.

It is naive to think that everyone is as honest as Trust, and the odds are if this family had parked a few cars down the road they would never have seen their iPad again.

Trust, you are my hero of the week. Thank you for being an amazing man, thank you for being honest and thank you for making Joburg a better place to live in.
