Celebrating the Kyalami Race Track – past, present and future

KYALAMI - The BMW Car Club Gauteng is encouraging the public to visit the historic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit before they close for alterations in May.

The club has a long history with the historic race track that goes back more than two decades.

Last year when news of the sale of the circuit was announced, the BMW car club presented a personalised thank you gift to CEO of Porsche South Africa, Toby Venter, as a show of appreciation and a commitment to continuing the existing relationship.

The circuit will be closed from May to September this year for alterations and changes to the track layout. As such, the Bridgestone Kyalami Track Challenge to be held on 18 April will be the last open event where drivers can enjoy the current layout. The experience will be one to remember and cherish. There are a number of ways the public can get involved.

Bridgestone Hot Laps are a three-lap experience around the track as a passenger. The cost is R100 per person and there is no need to pre-register for this.

Bridgestone Track School is a basic introduction to driving on track that includes some theory and practical training in a BMW Driving Experience M135i. The cost for this is R500 per person and an additional R150 if you enter the Track Challenge.

Watch a video the BMW Car Club Gauteng created to thank Porsche CEO Toby Venter:

Bridgestone Track Challenge is the most popular part of the event which is where the club’s racing series was born in 2010. Any make of car is welcome and every level of driving skill is catered for from a complete novice to a seasoned professional. Club membership, a Motorsport South Africa licence, a helmet and gloves are required. Helmets can be hired for R200 for the day. Participants will be placed in a session equivalent to their driving skill and their cars’ performance. If a participant finishes in the top 3 of the 10 classes, they will be awarded a prize. The cost for this is R950 per person.

Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series is also the third round for the popular Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series which as always promises exciting racing for spectators to enjoy.

Entry to the circuit is free of charge to the public. Gates open at 8am and the action kicks off shortly thereafter.
