Man speeds past Midrand on the N1 at 221km/h

MIDRAND - In anĀ attempt to show off how fast his Mercedes Benz could go, a man fled past the N1 South in Midrand at 221km/h at 2am on 22 March.

The man allegedly told police that he had sped to try and impress his brother, a passenger in the vehicle.

Metro police chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar confirmed the incident and said such behaviour on the road is unacceptable. He said, “The motorist is one of the 31 persons who were arrested for speeding in Johannesburg this past weekend. The 32-year-old from Pretoria clocked the highest speed at 221km/h.”

The motorist, who was driving a white Mercedes Benz C230i, was detained at Midrand Police Station. Midrand police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela confirmed that the suspect was arrested, “For negligent and reckless driving by Johannesburg Metro police and detained at the police station.”

All the 31 motorists will soon appear at various courts on charges of negligent and reckless driving.
