Buccleuch boy braves CHD

BUCCLEUCH - Resident Seshma Bhoopal is the proud mother of Ayaan (5), who was born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD).

Bhoopal and her family spent 7 to 14 February raising awareness during CHD Awareness Week. “Everyone is aware of Aids, cancer, bone marrow, Ebola and yet CHD is neglected and overlooked,” said Bhoopal. “It is mostly the CHD families that create awareness. I am a proud CHD mom. We are a proud CHD family who has been touched by a real heart hero. Ayaan is the most amazing gift in our lives.”

She said her son unfortunately received her diagnosis after six weeks of his birth which resulted in him not acquiring corrective surgery on time. She explained, “Ayaan has been to four open heart surgeries, four cardiac catheterisations, plictation of the diaphragm, tonsils, adenoids and draining of the sinuses, and frequently stays at the Sunninghill Hospital to treat infections.”

Ayaan has spent most of his time in 2010, 2011 and 2012 at the paediatric ward in hospital. He still needs his fifth open heart surgery and ultimately a heart and lung transplant. “He is a true fighter who enjoys and appreciates the smallest things that life has to offer him,” said Bhoopal. “He is a very happy, jovial, mischievous, determined, headstrong and an entertaining little boy, who is the pride and joy in our lives.”

Bhoopal said although Ayaan looks well from the outside, inside he is fragile. “He cannot go to school, or be with other children due to infections,” she added. “His dream is to go to school. I’m trying very hard to be consistent and home school him with the materials provided by teachers from Buccleuch Primary School.”

She said the awareness of CHD can prevent misdiagnosis and save lives. “We learn to make the best of each day, capture each moment and live small dreams in a little survivor,” said Bhoopal. She said Ayaan’s struggle and journey has given him fans all over the world. “The prayer and support of close family, friends and the community has been amazing.”
