Illegal hunters spotted on Lever Road

CASTERNHOF - A resident, Roland Marais, told Midrand Reporter that a group of illegal hunters with a pack of dogs were seen near Casternhof Clinic area. "The hunters ran away when they noticed that I could see them."

Marais said hunters were a problem in the area. On 21 November at 10am, Midrand Reporter spotted some hunters from a distance with many dogs on Lever Road in Midrand. Midrand Reporter managed to take a photo using a phone as the hunters walked behind townhouses.

SPCA chairperson Brenda Lucas said the animal shelter has received complaints of illegal hunting from residents in the past. “The hunter’s dogs are well trained, they are harder to trace and often, hunters whistle for the dogs and escape before we get to them.”

An inspector at the SPCA Theo Mokgatle said it is illegal to hunt in Midrand as many areas are a conservancy. He explained that the hunters often hunt for duikers, guinea fowls, squirrels, rabbits and snakes, which they sell to traditional healers or to eat. “Residents need a hunting licence before they take dogs to the bush. It is illegal to do so in any area, without a licence.”

Ria Sebetsa managing director Danny Maduray confirmed that the security company and the SPCA have worked together in many cases involving illegal hunting. “We have responded to reports of illegal hunting in Glen Austin, President Park and on Allandale Road near Casternhof Clinic.”

In many incidents, the hunters escaped into dense bushes. “Residents can call Ria Sebetsa directly to report such incidents so that we can respond promptly.”
