A doctor takes over beauty pageant

CARLSWALD - A doctor has found her way into the Commonwealth Pageant South Africa.

Doctor Laverne Asante has been selected as one of the top 20 Miss Commonwealth 2014 finalists. Talking about the pageant Asante said, “The pageant empowers women with the knowledge to bring change to communities in need. I am excited to be a part of this.”

The 26-year-old medical doctor lives in Carlswald in Midrand. She explained, “I have been living in Midrand for eight years. I joined Miss Commonwealth because it presented an opportunity to make a difference in the community.

“I have done other pageants before but this one gives me a chance to be an ambassador and represent the country on an international stage.”

Speaking about young girls who want to study medicine, Asante said, “Have a passion for medicine if you want to study it. Bear in mind that medicine is not just about being intelligent, you have to have the heart to serve people. It is hard work but it is rewarding to see the difference you can make in people’s lives.

“My parents inspire me greatly, they have worked very hard for all they have and gave me a better life.”

Asantes is also inspired by her patients who fight terminal illnesses with a smile.

The Miss Commonwealth grand finale takes place at the Lyric Theatre at Gold reef City on 29 August.

Asante added, “The winner will represent South Africa at the International pageant in London in November 2014. All 54 Commonwealth member sates will send a representative.”
