Human traffickers arrested

MIDRAND - Police arrested two suspects for human trafficking and being in possession of drugs in Halfway Gardens at 10pm on 24 May.

Midrand police communications officer, Constable Matome Tlamela said Midrand police’s crime intelligence unit, through an intelligence-driven operation, busted the two men who were in possession of several different types of narcotic drugs. She said police seized many drug related items.

The men were also keeping three women against their will.

“The women were used as sex workers and were always locked indoors,” said Tlamela. She said the suspects falsely told the women they would open a club in Midrand and they would be employed as waitresses.

“The suspects said they would prefer their employees to stay at their house in Midrand as there would be no public transport to their homes after hours because the club closed late. Upon the arrival of the women at the house, the suspects forced them to take drugs and entertain clients by offering them sexual favours,” said Tlamela.

She issued a warning to the community against falling victim to such scams.

“Investigations are ongoing and the Midrand crime intelligence office states that there is no place for drug dealers in Midrand,” said Tlamela.
