Towards a greener Kyalami

KYALAMI - The Greater Kyalami Conservancy is calling on the community to join a recycling project which will commence on 19 May.

A Diepsloot co-operative Bontle Ke Tlhago, a community-based business that offers employment to unemployed youth in Diepsloot, will offer kerbside recycling to residents.

This is not the first time Kyalami and Diepsloot communities have partnered to improve the environment. They have worked together on clean-up campaigns for both communities and planted trees for Arbour Day.

Chairperson of the conservancy, Kristin Kallesen explained that the co-operative needed to increase the volumes of waste to be recycled in order to run as a self-sustaining business, and she believed that areas such as Kyalami could help with this while also managing the area’s own waste.

“In discussions with Pikitup it was agreed to choose a pilot area, Glenferness and Kyalami Ridge, to test logistics and buy-in from the residents,” she said. “If the pilot is successful, the initiative will be expanded to include surrounding suburbs.”

The conservancy and Kyalami residents associations will partner with Bontle Ke Tlhago for the recycling initiative. This forms part of the conservancy’s Green Neighbourhood Project and the city council’s Separation at Source initiative.

“This is an exciting opportunity for each of us to play a part in protecting the environment while supporting our neighbours in Diepsloot,” said Kallesen.

Pamphlets and bags for recycling will be dropped off at houses in Glenferness and Kyalami Ridge, and these should be placed next to the Pikitup dustbins on collection days.

Kallesen said plastic, glass, tins, e-waste should be placed in the clear plastic bag. Paper products should be placed in the white bag and cardboard boxes could be placed next to the bins.

Food waste, toxic waste and steel can only be taken to Pikitup garden site on Cedar Road in Kyalami Agricultural Holdings.

Kallesen said Pikitup was helping to transport the waste for the co-operative until it could afford its own vehicle. Bontle Ke Tlhago was also requesting donations from the community for an eight-ton truck, pallet jack, forklift, weigh bridge, bailing machine and containers.
