Tim Noakes speaks in Midrand

THE THIRD in the series of Extraordinary South Africans will feature Professor Tim Noakes.

Not only recognised for his medical and physical achievements but also for the recent publication of his new book, Real Meal Revolution, co-authored by Jonno Proudfoot, David Grier and Sally-Ann Creed, that covers the scientific facts behind the low-carb, high-fat diet, including recipes and advice.

The talk will be presented on 28 January at 6.30pm at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. After arrival, there will be a 30-minute conversational lecture by Sandile Zungu, followed by a facilitated dialogue by the EmCee, with audience participation. This is the third in a series of facilitated conversations with outstanding South Africans who represent all that is extraordinary about being a South African, on a national and global stage. “The individuals we have selected display an unparalleled

aspire to emulate,” explained Andile Ncontsa, chairperson of Litha Communications. “We opened with Wendy Luhabe, followed by Sandile Zungu, and now get ready for a healthy new year with Tim Noakes.” Noakes studied at UCT, where he obtained a bachelor of medicine degree in 1974, became a doctor of medicine in 1981, and he obtained a doctor of science (medicine) in exercise science in 2002.

He is professor of the Discovery Health Chair of Exercise and Sports Science at UCT, director of the UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, and co-founded the Sports Science Institute of South Africa with Morné du Plessis.

He has published more than 450 scientific publications, has been cited more than 12 500 times in various papers. In that year, he also received the Order of Mapungubwe (silver) from the President of South Africa for his “excellent contribution in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise”. In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Research Foundation for his contribution to sports science research. Noakes has been physically active all his life and has run more than 70 marathons and ultra marathons, including seven 90km Comrades Marathons. Booking is essential.
