The Big Walk is an annual fundraiser that takes place at the Themba Senamele stadium in the month of September.
The purpose of the Big walk is to raise funds and awareness for the Paul Mthimunye Bursary Fund. This year on the 6 of September the Big Walk saw more positive participation.
The Paul Mthimunye Busary Fund was founded in August 2001 by Paul Mthimunye, a former teacher. It’s a partnership between the community and private sector in order to uplift, promote and improve the skills base within the community.
The event also aims to get the Steve Tshwete community to take interest in education.
The walkers and runners buy tickets to participate in the Big Walk which is 10.6 kilometres. The funds are then used for the Bursary Fund.
“The bursary fund has achieved a lot: this year 70 high school learners and 21 tertiary students are being funded, 29 tertiary students have completed their studies with 25 students already employed,” Mr Mthimunye said.
This year’s Big Walk was bigger than ever with more then 2200 people participating.
