To Jacques, running has not been a hobby nor a phase, his affinity for the triumph of the human spirit has manifested into a lifelong obsession with all things fitness.
His journey began during his boyhood days playing at the Vaal River.
He would run to the water with glee, and after a day of playing under the hot sun, he would run back just in time for supper. This totalled around 8km almost every day, no mean feat.
The next fundamental chapter in his life was during his college years, where he watched in awe as Bruce Fordyce began his ascent within the world of athletics. Watching a legend cast his name in the history books inspired Jacques to test his mettle and participate in events such as the Comrades Marathon.
Yet, this wasn’t enough, he wanted to share the amazing feeling of accomplishment and confidence that fitness brings with as many people as he could.
Thus, Jacques earned a doctorate in Sports Science and Biochemistry, which has aided him in providing the best in class service to all runners in his stable.
Since its inception in September of last year, Jacques’ Run/Walk For Life Belfast has served as a beacon of positivity in the town.
Practicing three times a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 17:30, and Saturdays at 07:30), the club has a specialised focus on individual care.
Monitoring health concerns, such as blood pressure and cholesterol, Run/Walk For Life Belfast even checks pulses at the end of rounds.
This is what makes the club the perfect environment for healthy individuals, as well as those recovering from illnesses, like heart attack rehabilitation, and those looking to get healthier.
Progress is gradual and safe, with slight increments in training intensity or time after every three sessions.
This is also key in the prevention of injuries, as it allows the body to adapt at its own pace.
You can find the club at Belfast Academy on Linaria Street.
