Barefoot for Cancer Fun Walk to be held at Tarries Park

A special walk is set to take place at Tarries Park this Saturday, inspired by and in aid of those who are battling cancer.

Naomi Steenkamp, Mrs Middelburg 2023 and Mrs Nkangala International Village 2024, has organised a Barefoot for Cancer Fun Walk to be held at Tarries Park this Saturday.

As part of the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (CANSA) Active initiative, Steenkamp was inspired to host the event to raise awareness as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Steenkamp told the Middelburg Observer, “The barefoot walk represents the pain and determination of those with a cancer diagnosis, as completing the walk will symbolise the same difficult journey those brave heroes with cancer go through.”

Although the walk coincides and is inspired by Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Steenkamp wants everyone diagnosed or who has a family member battling cancer, to feel welcomed and embraced at the event.

More information about the event.

Registration will take place from 06:20–07:00, with the walk’s starting time set for 07:15.

A R50 per person fee is required to take part in the 4.5km Fun Walk.

Children under the age of five will be granted free entry, and dogs that are leashed and social are also welcome to attend and participate.

It must be emphasised that dogs must remain leashed at all times.

The dress code is simple, wear something pink, with shoes entirely optional.

CANSA is sponsoring the gift prizes for the first, second and third place winners for both the women and men categories.

A variety of stalls will be available, selling cool drinks, coffee, breakfast and more.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

According to CANSA, “Approximately 19.4 million women aged 15 years and older live at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer – the cancer affecting women in South Africa the most.”

As such, Steenkamp implores the public to donate a pre-loved or new sports bra that will be given to underprivileged girls.
