‘This was a miracle. God gave him a second chance’

A man escaped a near-death experience on the R35 Bethal Road.

A miracle took place on the R35 Bethal road yesterday evening, with a driver mere millimetres from certain death.

When Edward Klopper of Mid Towing arrived at the accident scene of a near head-on collision between a car and a truck, he expected the worst.

He looked at the mangled Mazda and was certain that the driver was dead, with the car having gone underneath the front wheel of the truck.

But Edward could not believe his eyes when the driver of the Mazda climbed out of the car relatively unscathed and began talking to the people at the scene.

“This was a miracle. God gave him a second chance,” Mr Klopper said.

The collision saw the Mazda detach the truck’s front wheel and diesel tank before spinning away from the heavy motor vehicle.

The truck, which had not been carrying a load, jack-knifed, coming to a standstill 20m into a nearby field.

Edward said the truck was ‘millimetres’ away from crushing the Mazda driver, who was the only person inside the car.

After the accident, the truck and the Mazda were at a standstill 15 metres away from one another.

Both drivers were in shock but sustained no serious injuries.

“What was amazing is that the car had stayed upright and hadn’t rolled,” Edward exclaimed.

• The incident happened at 20:40, just before the Komati Power Station turn-off, where the road makes a hazardous turn.
