Electrical department employees traumatised after shocking on-duty hijacking

Two municipal technicians working on a power line on Dr Beyers Naude and Oos Street were hijacked and robbed of their municipal bakkie yesterday (Wednesday) evening.

According to information, the incident happened at about 22:00.

The senior female technician and male assistant were approached by a gold VW Polo with two men who asked for directions to 4 SAI.

Minutes later, two men on foot pointed a firearm at the workers and instructed them to lie on the ground.

They were then forced into the back of the bakkie.

While driving towards Eastdene, one suspect ‘guarded’ the workers while the other drove.

In a bizarre turn of events, the canopy of the bakkie fell off , and one of the suspects fell out of the moving vehicle.

The two municipal workers seized the opportunity to escape and ran to the nearest filling station, where the petrol attendants pressed a panic button, and Mid Alarms rushed to their aid.

Fortunately, the victims were unharmed.

The bakkie was later found abandoned on the N11 near Hlalamnandi, and the suspects are still at large.

A hijacking case was opened at the Middelburg Police Station, and investigations are underway.
