Human trafficking quartet still in custody

The four men accused of human trafficking have been remanded in custody.

Cornelius Johannes Uys (60), Cornelis Johannes Albertus Uys (23), Carlos Bernardo Guambe (34), and Gabriel Bernardo Guambe (32) appeared before the Belfast Magistrate Court on July 15. The matter was postponed to July 25.

The four men were arrested by the Hawks Nelspruit-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit on a farm in Belfast.

Mozambican nationals Carlos Bernardo Guambe (34) and Gabriel Bernardo Guambe (32) were arrested on June 25, while the father and son duo were arrested on July 3.

The 39 victims were transported from Mozambique to Belfast, where officials rescued seven women, nine children under the age of five, and 23 men. They were all illegal immigrants.
