Stomach virus takes hold – 99 learners absent

A grave stomach virus has taken hold of the community, as well as besieged a local primary school.

Headmaster of Laerskool Kanonkop, Mr Riaan Kruger, has confirmed that 99 learners have been affected by the bug today (Wednesday) alone.

To curb the spread of the stomach bug, the school has ultimately decided to cancel their upcoming Hop-Hop event, as well as the netball trials. Mr Kruger said that they will consider cancelling the rugby trials as well, depending on the severity of the outbreak.

Local physician Dr Redge Janse van Rensburg confirmed that an alarming spread of the bug was observed during the course of last week, especially regarding children. He confirmed that a number of minors were taken to the Middok 24/7 emergency unit for dehydration.

He declined to confirm whether the bug making its rounds was a manifestation of Covid-19, but did conclude that it is likely spread through contaminated drinking water.

He furthermore suggested that residents buy pure drinking water, or boil drinking water for consumption, and wash hands diligently.
