Middelburg Hearing Centre: Well-hearing is well-being

We hear a lot about the smells and sights of spring, the smell of fresh rain or brightly coloured flowers, but what about the sounds? Whether it's leaves crunching or a crackling fire, your hearing is also an integral part of your ability to enjoy the changing of the seasons.

So, how’s your hearing?

October not only brings summer, it’s also celebrated worldwide as National Audiology Awareness Month, and that is why the passionate team at Middelburg Hearing Centre are bringing hearing healthcare to you with an upcoming Wellness Day, where your hearing health, as well as your general well-being, can be seen to by the collaboration of healthcare professionals.

Bianca Brewis (audiologist), Lindi le Roux (audiologist and speech therapist), Adele Heunis (assistant) and Anrike Bester (speech therapist)

Audiologist and speech therapist Lindi le Roux explains that 360 million people worldwide suffer from hearing loss, of which only 10 per cent ever seek treatment. Ms Le Roux further highlighted the extensive impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has on hearing health, “With exception to the effect that self-isolation and the wearing of masks have on people who live with hearing loss, we also know that viral and bacterial infections can result in sudden hearing loss.”

She added that Covid-19, as well as the use of ototoxic medications to treat the virus, can result in neurological illnesses that include hearing loss, as well as balance disorders and tinnitus. Tinnitus is another medical condition that is commonly experienced, which also deeply impacts your quality of life. Tinnitus is often associated with a constant noise, like ringing or buzzing in the inner ear or head that affects a patient’s sleep, cortisol levels, mental health and communication skills.

The most common cause of tinnitus is damage to the hair cells in the inner ear. This can be caused by age, exposure to loud noise, trauma to the head or neck, emotional trauma like depression or stress, as well as a reaction to certain types of medication. But tinnitus can be treated, says Ms Le Roux, “The first step would be to visit your doctor or audiologist so that they can determine the cause of tinnitus. The form of treatment, which includes medication, hearing aids and other types of therapy, could then be recommended to help the patient live with tinnitus.”

To make it easier for you to give the appropriate attention to your hearing health, the Middelburg Hearing Centre will be hosting their Wellness Day on October 28, in collaboration with other medical professionals. For Audiology Awareness Month, the Middelburg Hearing Centre will be running a promotion on hearing aid batteries, where one packet can be purchased for R25 from October 22 to 28.
Free hearing screenings will also be conducted on October 28, by appointment only.

Booking an appointment for a hearing test before October 27 will automatically enter you into their lucky draw, where a set of hearing aids to the value of R50 000 can be won.
